CKU Shanghai dog show

We entered the CKU (China kennel Union who is a FCI partner) Shanghai dog show last weekend.  This time I tried to
grooming yy all by myself although my grooming skills was not good enough. There are only four adult shelties at the first day in breed ring . We easily to win BOB under the judge Mr. HORST KLIEBENSTEIN. And he also award yy as "Excellent" on the judge card.
This was second time we show at CKU 's dog show. And it was also second "Excellent" s judge card we had been recieved. Athough we were not placed in the Group on next day. But I think this is a nice show experience to us. Thanks to all my friends who always encourage us.

Show photo of Su Zhou dog show

We had gone to All breed dog show of Su Zhou which city nearby Shanghai on july 22nd.
It's first time yy join the open class match. And I handled yy by myself without experience.
Although our showmanship was so poor and yy was really out of coat that day, YY still got WB in open class.
When judge give us WB, I was very amazed because I know my skills of handling was terrible and I was too nervous.
There's some photo about the show.

And you could see more breed class show photo at this website:

The blue merle dog Ch. Kismet's Anniversary Celebration, call name "Caleb" finally win BOB in open class.

Both I and YY need 'self-confidence'

YY has outgoing attitude when she 3 to 5 months. When she growed, she becomed to be shy. I had a serious mistake that I sent her to a training class on a local kennel for one month when the girl just 7 months ago. YY resided the kennel and was visited once weekly. The girl might considered she was been abandoned by her owner. She turned to lost confidence and dusky. When I took her back to home, she even got skin disease near her muzzle. The kennel is irresponsible and the training class is badly counteractive too. It deepl y beated YY's mettle.
My inexperienced behavior and attitude to YY  (lack correct socialization) and my false choice maked yy for a shyly, cowardly tempermament.
Now the girl is above 2 1/2 years old. I make a long time planning to re-socialize her and bring up her more trust for human.
I started to socialize and train my sable girl YY from last week.
    My method includ:
1, Every evening I take YY to busy streets nearby my home about half to one hour where she could meet every kinds of person there.   I will never force her to accept stranger's touch. But I will encourage her again and again.
2, ROAD WORK. When we back to home after outgoing, she will run on the treadmill with speed at 5 miles per hour for about 25 minutes.
On the other point, I also need to training myshelf. Sheltie is a sensitive breed. They could be influenced by their owner's feeling. So I must build up my self-confidence too.
I would try my best! Bless both of us!

Some faults be touted as perfect

(My Study Note and some my personal thought)

By learning more about structure of Shelties, I find out some faultes that usually be touted as perfect by some beginner.

1, Wide Rear OR Wide Front
It is even admired by some breeders and judges as well as by beginners who do not bother to learn proper structure for a Sheltie.
A sheltie with wide rear or wide front often stands perfectly. In fact, he is often touted as not being able to stand wrong.

Wide parallel movement is more obvious at a slow gait because the fast trot will force the legs closer for balance.
This fault is quite common.  A dog moving wide in rear or in front lacks agility to turn by not being able to pivot  readily from the center line. It also means he will use more strength to turn his leg to the center line. (deviation from the correct Tireless GAIT)
Occasionally a wide mover, particularly one who is wide both front and rear, develops a characteristic “roll” from throwing the weight from side to side. He varies from the individual who hocks out in that the hocks remain in line and appear strong. Wide rears rarely affect side gait.

2, Barrel-rib

The standard say: "The ribs should be well sprung, but flattened at their lower half to allow free play of the foreleg and shoulder. Abdomen moderately tucked up."
"the brisket reaching to the point of elbow".
Barrel-ribs often lack depth and cause the elbows to swing out to go around the interference. So the efficiency in gait will be destroyed.
Some breed like British bull-dog request the rouded rib. How does the bull-dog move? The answer is "roll". :)

3, Short legs
There were some unaccepted sub type such as COLLIE TYPE, POM TYPE at the past time. Now some of shelties who has too short legs regards as Shorgi type (corgi + sheltie?).
A few folks may be forget the standard: "Elbow joint should be equidistant from the ground and from the withers"!
I personaly cann't suffer from the too short and thick legs on a sheltie. When I first look at them I will bethink of corgi. IMHO, they were out of balance with ill-looking.
A shetlie with short legs aslo cann't move great by lacking drive and reach.

4, Over angulared stifle
Maybe The Over angulared stifle is a fashion in most of breed today.  Do you think the dog stands wonderful with the over angulared rear? Yes, he may stands firmly. But he cann't move great too.
A over angulared stifle dog usually has too long stifle than thighbone with his foot lay too backward under the body.
At his maximum reach in an extended trot, the Sheltie's front leg may reach with undue upward swing because of the different angles of the lay back shoulder from the stifle.
He also may be lack of alignment of the body in motion. It calls "CRABING" that the dog moves somewhat sideways with the rear tracking to left or right of the front. This last consideration of gait is more easily seen coming or going.

Above all, Having the same angle at shoulder and stifle is most important. I regards the ideal angle of stifle is 45 degree the same as the lay back shoulder.

5, Too thick and heavy head
I'm so confused that a few person in my country think that the better skull is so heavy and thick in AKC blood line. They aslo regard it as the different from the Europe blood line and USA,CAN blood line.
It must be mistake.
A beautiful sheltie should have soft, sweetie expression. The too thick heavy head mostly without the true SHELTIE expression.
A over heavy head dog with heavy bone in body will lost the sheltie's "agility" too.

The diagram is border collie's front, it similar as sheltie's

Happy Chinese New Year

I had some free days of the chinese new year.
I spent most of my holiday time to learn shelties, including structure and gait by reading book,  website, etc.
I know  there are lots of sub-type in this breed today. But I regards that SUBTYPE must fit to STANDARD.
Sheltie is a herding dog, a working dog, the character of the structure and gait must suit to his working--- the essential function.
I start to re-collect any photo of Great ROM ROMC shelties, champion shetlies, any of beautiful shelties what can collected from worldwide website.
And I will named the pic with the dog's name, and with annotation of the imformation of his pedigree, characteristic or some my own thought.
I think this work can help me find out the most bloodline of today's shelties.
What's the correct sheltie?
I wish I can find it in my idea by learning more and more.
